Impressive, but hardly miraculous. The guy learned how to back-slide out of a skid. Any decent roundy-rounder could have done that.

Two cheers for the cops who stuck with him and broughthim to a safe stop.

I know today it's not politically correct, but in my youth (the 1970s) there was far less traffic than today, so high speed driving wasn't nearly so dangerous to bystanders as now. Plus, where I lived, the police weren't considered to be much different from the criminals. So me and friends were known to get them to chase us for fun (I lived in a wild rural town in Tennessee; the local newspaper archives will verify much of this for anyone who wants to look).

I drove a heavily souped up Ford Mustang.

A few years ago I decided enough time had passed that I could write up some accounts of those days-- plus reveal the specs of my car, and how I built it-- without getting into legal trouble (30 years passed should be plenty, right?). You can see it all now at <a href="http://www.jmooneyham.com/shadowfast-supercar-driver-logs.html" title="The Shadowfast supercar driver logs" rel="nofollow">.
