2010 is without a doubt one banner year for Ford – as their Fusion sedan and Transit Connect van have won North America’s Car & Truck of the Year awards! More specifically, the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid, which has grabbed attention long before the vehicle debuted back in 2009, and Ford’s European-design Econoline replacement – the all around incredible Transit Connect.

According to Automotive News: The Fusion Hybrid topped car finalists Buick LaCrosse and Volkswagen Golf. The Transit Connect came out on top over the Chevrolet Equinox and Subaru Outback. In the 17 years for the awards, U.S.-based automakers have taken home the car trophy nine times. European companies have won four times, Japanese three and South Korea’s Hyundai once.

It’s probably safe to put your money on more hybrid vehicles winning the prestigious award, based on the accolades of auto journalists from across the continent – whether they are as big a car as Fusion or as small a “truck” as Transit Connect.

Actually this ragtag group of androgynous performers are in no way related to Ford Motor Company. They’re the Le Queer X Show, a troupe who travel across the plains and villages of France & Europe, spreading entertainment, understanding of queer culture, and do it all while living out of a Ford Transit Connect. If you read our blog and are an Ex-Pat, you should check them out!

Ford Motor Company is on a roll with new vehicles that are greener and offer lower carbon emissions. The new minivan, dubbed Ford Transit with ECOnetic, can deliver greater mileage by up to 10 percent. It also has a Stage 5 emission level that can provide a 29 mpg rating.

[nggallery id=3]

“In the real world, a fuel economy saving of 10 percent can make a major impact on running costs. Transit has always been the vehicle business people choose when they want value for money and low cost of ownership. With this new ECOnetic version, we now have the best in class CO2,” Ford’s commercial vehicle directory Steve Kimber said in a statement.

The Ford Transit ECOnetic is priced around $25,000 in Britain and is based on the front-wheel drive Transit 280 panel van with short wheelbase. It is powered by a 2.2-litre 115PS Duratorq TDCi engine and runs on diesel. Yes, I said that right, it runs on diesel fuel.

The Ford van is only available in Britain and parts of Europe. However, this vehicle is similar to the 2010 Ford Connect which will soon be available throughout the United States. The Transit Connect is a spacious fuel-efficient alternative to larger commercial vehicles and was first unveiled at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show.

Ford Transit Connect has front-wheel drive with an upgraded powertrain. It is powered by a Duratec 2.0-liter dual-overhead cam (DOHC) four-cylinder engine. The Transit also has several design enhancements including the grille and interior touches. It is probably the best fuel efficient commercial van that will hit the market.

“This workhorse is like nothing available today in the American market,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president of Global Product Development. “We’re offering small business owners a real choice to meet their needs, instead of asking them to pull seats out of minivans or compromise on one or more of their needs.”

Ford hybrid vehicles, including the Fusion and the Escape SUV, are top performers in the United States. The Ford Transit Connect will only add to a successful line-up. For example, shipping companies can save on gas while helping the environment. Ford Motor Company is providing technologies in vehicles that reduce carbon emissions in the commercial transportation business.

Remember the glory days of Ford’s Econoline Van? You know, the one painters/welders/glass repairmen/child abductors use? It now seems, at least in Greater New York, Ford’s Transit Connect may become the new working class van. But can the smaller, European styling ride with 22/25 MPG and a load capacity of 1600 lbs compete against other work vehicles from GMC and even Ford’s Crown Victoria taxis?

In comparison to other utility autos the 2010 Transit Connect is a small wonder – measuring only 167 inches you wouldn’t think the an would be a great pick for commuter transport or delivery service. But Ford is staking a big claim on their Transit, with hopes that The Big Apple can be a solid testing ground for the vehicle, as it is up to use as construction automobiles as well as taxi cabs.

Transit Connect isn’t the most powerful thing on four wheels, nor the fastest. With a 136 horse power engine with 128 ft-lb of torque you won’t win any late night drag races out on Long Island. But you don’t need speed when it comes to a work van – or do you? Breakaway speed is sometimes essential while tooling around Midtown during rush hour. Transit Connect does feature solid steering, brakes (a must have) and a decent turning radius of 39 ft.

Ford’s Fiesta, the other great European Ford coming stateside, won’t be on sale until sometime next year – but FoMoCo is going ahead with sales of 2010′s Transit Connect this summer. You’ll be set back $21,475, but you can probably write it off as a business expense if you’re going to strap ladders and repair equipment in the rear. As for the NYC Cab connect we can’t wait to see if the Transit Connect makes a hit as a possible future Yellow Cab for New York City.
