Ford’s Last Crown Victoria Comes Off Assembly Line

Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis, Lincoln Town Cars – 10 million Panther Platform vehicles have been built since 1979. This past Thursday, the last model ever built rolled off the line at Ford’s St. Thomas plant in Ontario, Canada.

“Production levels at the plant have declined by 60 percent in the last decade as customer preferences shifted to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles,” Ford remarked in a published announcement. Crown Victoria was available only for fleet sales since 2008, mostly in police, taxi and rental car form.

Since 1996, Ford’s Crown Victoria held a monopoly as the police pursuit vehicle in North America. Crown Victoria remained popular thanks to its rear-wheel drive layout and V8 powertrain.

“Though modern front-wheel drive vehicles have been popular with consumers, they failed to challenge the Crown Victoria’s supremacy as a taxicab, fleet vehicle and police car where durability and cost performance are valued over fuel efficiency.”

Ford is offering $100,000 in relocation offers for the workers at the St. Thomas Assembly plant, according to Peter Valdes-Dapena on CNNMoney.com.

The Crown Vic Police Cruiser Retired By Ford

Ford is retiring its Crown Victoria police car after 30 years of service. The automaker plans on replacing the fleet sales to police departments with either the new Ford Explorer SUV or smaller Taurus Police Interceptors. For decades, Ford shoppers in Fairfax, VA or anywhere else in North America could purchase a non-police spec Crown Victoria – though the company ceased regular distribution of the car in 2008.

‘Crown Vic’ was a very successful police car model. It represented 70% of the police car market in the United States. Sales have been up 64% this year, as police departments stock up before the car’s run comes to an end.

According to WorldCarFans:

Ford may not be as successful in the future with the Explorer and Taurus police vehicles as it was with the beloved Crown Vic. The automaker now faces competition from a new Chevrolet Caprice police vehicle from GM and a redesigned Dodge Charger cruiser from Chrysler. Ford ended sales of the Crown Vic to private customers back in 2008.

New York is one of the pinnacle art cities in the world. Home to historic landmarks and museums, even the sides of buildings, subway cars and livery cabs can be transformed into galleries. The Ford Crown Victoria, in its final years as a New York City taxi, was chosen as part of a public display in Midtown. A company called “Show Media” – who rents out the ad space atop cabs, has donated several cars and light up signs to artists Chuck Close and Kehinde Wiley. Crown Vic Taxi #666 Hits Hotel in Detroit Rock City

They say it’s cold in the D – apparently not cold enough to keep this cabbie awake. Yes, that taxi is #666 – so it was only a matter of time before it went slamming into a house, a crowd of people…or maybe not as there are not enough people living in Detroit to get a crowd together.
